5 Common Central Heating Problems

Central heating systems are usually reliable, but occasionally they break down and require attention from a plumber. Here are a few common issues that affect central heating systems, along with advice for how to solve them.

1. Controls Not Working

Before you do anything else, check the controls for your central heating system. Ensure that the thermostat is turned on and that the temperature is set sufficiently high to trigger the central heating system to switch on. Try turning the temperature up a little to see if that makes your radiators warm up.

If the control panel is not working at all, there might be a problem with its electricity supply. Check the fuse or circuit breaker to see if the power supply has shut off. Restore the power supply by replacing the fuse or call an electrician if you cannot find the source of the problem.

2. Radiators Cold at the Top

If your radiators are warm at the bottom and cold at the top, the most likely explanation is that there is air trapped inside them. You can easily remove this air by bleeding the radiator. Put down towels to protect your carpets or floors and then open the valve at the top of the radiator. You should hear air rushing out, followed by a trickle of water. Close the valve as soon as the water appears.

3. Bad Smells

If your central heating system smells bad, it is likely that there is mould growing inside the radiators. Mould growth occurs when sludge builds up in the system. To solve this problem, you need to dismantle the radiator and flush it with clean water to remove the build-up. If you don't know how to do this, contact a plumber to help you out.

4. Strange Noises

It is relatively common for central heating systems to make strange noises, such as banging or tapping, when they are heating up or cooling down. The cause is excess air in the system. Bleeding your radiators might help as might flushing the system.

5. Wrong Pressure

Leaks in your central heating system can cause the pressure in the boiler to drop, which might prevent the system from working properly. Topping up the system with water can help, but if the pressure keeps dropping, you need to consult a plumber fast.

If the pressure in the central heating system is too high, that could be a sign of a dangerous malfunction. Shut off the system and call an emergency plumber to resolve the problem for you.

If you are concerned about any plumbing on your property, then reach out to a local emergency plumber for help.
